One of Australia’s Oldest Cafe Chains Awards National Barista of the Year

NATIONAL COMPETITION SHOWCASES TOP BARISTAS
FROM ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST CAFÉ CHAINS

Every year, Shingle Inn Cafes run a Barista of the Year (BOTY) competition to bring together its network of trained baristas toward further professional development, recognition in their craft and healthy competition amongst a community of other baristas.

Now in its tenth year, the Shingle Inn Barista of the Year Championships was held in June at Suntory Coffee Roasters, Newstead. Following a three month period of in-store heats and state championships, there were seven finalists progressed to the National Championships; one representative from WA, NSW and VIC as well as four representatives from QLD including the 2018 BOTY Defending Champion; Chenise Kirby.

The finalists include Sebastian Wallis from Shingle Inn Joondalup (WA), Yuliia Kurbanmahomedova from Shingle Inn Tuggerah (NSW), Shawn Tan from Shingle Inn Forest Hill Chase (VIC), Melisha Reddy from Shingle Inn Grand Plaza (QLD), Jessica Andrews from Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney (QLD), Josia Nann from Shingle Inn Myer Centre (QLD) and 2018 BOTY Defending Champion; Chenise Kirby from Shingle Inn Sunshine Plaza (QLD).

During the full-day competition, the skilled baristas from around the country showcased their technique, professionalism and creativity. Each of the seven competitors prepared and served 12 orders, including four espressos, four flat whites and four original signature drinks of their own creation, all within a 15-minute time frame.

The judges were impressed with the level of talent shown by each individual competitor throughout the competition, commenting that it was unpredictable who would take out the winning title. “The display of signature drinks throughout this competition is of the same standard seen in other international-grade coffee competitions.”  Competition judge and representative from Suntory Coffee, Hannah Fielding presented the final results to the competitors and a collective support network consisting of Shingle Inn Support Office members and Shingle Inn Franchise Owners as well as friends and family.

The 2019 Barista of the Year National Champion title was awarded to Melisha Reddy from Grand Plaza, QLD. Ms Reddy has worked in Grand Plaza’s popular Shingle Inn Café for seven years under Franchise owner (and father), Peter Reddy. A humble acceptance of this prestigious winning title was taken out by Ms Reddy who maintains the perfect cup of coffee is a balance of technique and passion.
