Grand Plaza Cafe Awarded Most Progressive in National Network

September 29, 2015 By Shingle Inn

A popular café in Grand Plaza shopping centre, Shingle Inn Grand Plaza, has just been named Franchisee of the Year for the second consecutive year.

The announcement was made at the prestigious Gala Dinner of the Shingle Inn Annual Franchisee Conference, held this year on Moreton Island. Representatives of the network’s 51 stores from across the country were present to discover new company initiatives and business motivation during multiple presentations made over three days.

Since franchisees Peter and Patsy Reddy opened the café in August 2011, it has become a popular meeting place for local friends and family members to connect among the café’s ambient décor.

“We had originally chosen Shingle Inn for its heritage and rich brand culture. Having won the Franchisee of the Award for consecutive two years, we feel like we are truly part of Shingle Inn’s history now,” Mr Reddy said.

“We are delighted to continue to welcome customers who are thrilled to discover many popular favourites from their childhood still on the menu, such as the original recipe for the famous decadent waffles, butter cakes and patty cakes, all made in Shingle Inn’s central bakery.”

Shingle Inn Grand Plaza was also one of a handful of stores to be awarded Platinum Club Status. This was awarded to only a handful of stores who are setting the benchmark across the network, by achieving and exceeding in systems and processes that has made Shingle Inn popular with generations of customers.

Mr Reddy said it was clear to him that the coffee industry in Australia is evolving and getting more competitive, as customers become more educated about quality coffee, which is made by a properly trained and professional Barista. Shingle Inn is very focused on ensuring baristas have the highest standard of ongoing training, to ensure they won’t be left behind in the industry, he said.

According to co-Director, Andrew Bellchambers, Shingle Inn Grand Plaza are extremely worthy recipients of the prestigious and coveted 2015 Franchisee of the Year Award.

“Peter and Patsy have always been enthusiastic in taking on new methods in technology and customer service. They also have the knack of selecting a fantastically talented and motivated team, and this combination generates the expected sales output.”

“It is also exciting to see our passionate Baristas constantly experimenting, and then sharing their knowledge, passion and commitment as part of the coffee industry with other Shingle Inn team members around the country via a specialised social media channel, which in turn helps the industry thrive and evolve.”

Mr Bellchambers said the future of Australia’s coffee industry relies on café owners, roasters, trainers and baristas to be educated and aware of new standards through quality training and being involved in the Australian coffee community.

“The Annual Franchisee of the Year Award reflects Shingle Inn Grand Plaza’s commitment to contributing to the entire coffee industry, whilst also consistently providing world-class, memorable service to customers. We all congratulate them on this impressive achievement.”

Heritage Café Welcomed in Strathpine, QLD

July 29, 2015 By Shingle Inn

Strathpine residents will now be able to celebrate traditional Brisbane café history brought to life, through a café that was established and loved well before ‘coffee culture’ became trendy.

New franchisees Carrie and Ling Yang opened their doors just in time for local Strathpine residents searching for excellent coffee as the days cool down.

Ms Yang first discovered the Shingle Inn culture and quality when she joined the Shingle Inn team at the North Lakes café.

It was while she was employed here as a Supervisor that she began to appreciate Shingle Inn’s rich heritage as one of Brisbane’s most established cafes, with its roots amidst a backdrop of the Great Depression in Brisbane, nearly 80 years ago.

Ms Yang felt was so endeared to the charm of the café that she decided to acquire and manage her own Shingle Inn, providing excellent coffee and warm service to local residents of Strathpine.

“Shingle Inn’s family values were really appealing to me, because I feel supported while I am taking such a large step forward in my career to manage and own a business for the first time,” she said.

Shingle Inn café has recently opened its milestone 50th café in Perth CBD, just a month before the Strathpine venue, taking the Shingle Inn heritage and values right across Australia.

Shingle Inn was originally opened on Edward Street, Brisbane, in the Autumn of 1936. Since December 2009, Shingle Inn has expanded to 50 stores across Australia, which included the high profile re-opening of the original store within Brisbane’s City Hall, as well as stores in New South Wales, ACT, Victoria and Western Australia.

Now into its 79 year history, the café has only been owned by two families. The current custodian, the Bellchambers family, has owned it for 40 years.

ICONIC BRISBANE CAFÉ NETWORK BACKS MAROONS IN TRADITIONAL BISCUIT WAR

July 7, 2015 By Shingle Inn

Maroons picBrisbane’s Shingle Inn cafés are almost as iconic as the fiercely fought State of Origin series, and this year Shingle Inn will be celebrating the “decider” set to be determined on home soil at Suncorp Stadium.

Unbeknown to many footy fans, Queensland and New South Wales (the sport’s two major states) have in fact been playing representative matches against each other since the 1908 establishment of rugby league in Australia. These games have continued into the “state of origin” era as we know it, which began in the 1980s.

As Shingle Inn was originally opened on Edward Street, Brisbane, in the Autumn of 1936, this means that Queensland and New South Wales rugby league teams had already been challenging each other to matches for quite some years by the time the first patty cake was sold.

It‘s therefore no surprise that Shingle Inn would incorporate another great Brisbane tradition into its culture, by producing seasonal State of Origin biscuits to celebrate the annual best-of-three Australian rugby league football series between two state representative sides, New South Wales “The Blues“ and Queensland “The Maroons“.

Shingle Inn Area Manager Megan Riek has been actively involved for many State of Origin series, made even more exciting by the unique and delicious biscuits sold in Shingle Inn cafés across Queensland at this time of year.

“We introduced the little football player-dressed cookies back in 2002 to great success. Not only are they delicious, they’re detailed right down to their jersey number, and around the Origin series, they are typically purchased en mass for State of Origin parties and good old workplace rivalry,” she said.

“It is to be expected that the maroons coloured biscuits sell out faster, but we know there are some wayward blues supporters in our midst, so there is always demand for the blues biscuits too.”

The State of Origin biscuits can be purchased at all Shingle Inn stores across QLD up until State of Origin and are priced at $3.90

Award winning franchisee wins again

October 15, 2014 By Shingle Inn

Shingle Inn Grand Plaza franchisee Peter Reddy is not resting on his laurels, despite his store winning its third award this year and the highest accolade within the Shingle Inn network – Shingle Inn’s Franchisee of the Year.

Following on from being announced as the 2013/ 2014 Grand Plaza Retailer of the Year, against over 160 outlets including Woolworths and the 2013/ 2014 Grand Plaza Food Retailer of the Year, against all the food outlets, cafes and restaurants within the shopping centre, Peter and his team at Shingle Inn Grand Plaza were recognised as Platinum Club members and the 2014 Shingle Inn Franchisee of the Year at the company’s recent conference.

“We were absolutely thrilled to win such a coveted award,” says Peter who was at Shingle Inn’s Gala Dinner to accept the award on behalf of his team. “Within the team we all felt a mixture of shock and excitement at the announcement but are so pleased that our hard work and commitment have been recognised with this achievement.”

Peter’s wife, Patsy, and their children have worked together in the café since it first opened in August 2011. They were awarded the 2012 Rookie Franchisee of the Year in their first year which now seems prophetic.

“My family plays such a significant role in this business,” says Peter, “and without all their effort and support these awards would not have been possible and I was so pleased to accept the award on their behalf and on behalf of my wonderful team.”

“We also acknowledge the contribution and loyalty of our wonderful customers. We love seeing them come back time and again and building a relationship with them all as they take time out in our café.”

“We are going to remain focussed though and not get too carried away with celebrating as we want to build towards further success in the future,” says Peter.

The team’s hard work is obviously paying off with many positive comments, especially via Shingle Inn’s facebook page, saying how wonderful the coffee and service is at Shingle Inn Grand Plaza.

Award Winning Coffee the Latest Accolade for Mt Ommaney

October 15, 2014 By Shingle Inn

Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney franchisee, Nicki Nesbitt, received Shingle Inn’s highest coffee accolade recently in a hotly contested barista competition against franchisees and store managers representing each of Shingle Inn’s 40 nation-wide stores.

The barista competition win was hot on the heels of Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney being named as the Franchise Council of Australia’s QLD/ NT Franchisee of the Year (2 or more staff) and comes just before this month’s announcement of the national award winner which Nicki sees as a good omen.

“We were totally amazed to have been nominated as the Queensland/ Northern Territory Franchisee of the Year for the second year in a row so I’m secretly hoping that the coffee competition win is the sign of more awards heading our way,” says Nicki with a grin.

Nicki and her co-owners, husband Wiesiek Lewandowski, and their best friends April and Tony Carnie, will head to Sydney ahead of the announcement of the national award winner at the FCA’s Gala Dinner on Tuesday 28 October. As part of their Queensland win, Nicki and April receive flights, accommodation and tickets to the event and will be joined by their husbands and a team from Shingle Inn’s head office.

“We thought it would be a nice opportunity to have a short break together too.”

“The best part about winning both these awards is the response we get from our customers, some of whom have brought us cards and gifts of congratulations,” says Nicki. “Part of the rewards of owning our own business is the relationships we’ve been able to build with our customers over the past, almost, five years. They’re a special part of our lives. We really hope we can win it for them,” says Nicki.
