Award winning franchisee wins again
Shingle Inn Grand Plaza franchisee Peter Reddy is not resting on his laurels, despite his store winning its third award this year and the highest accolade within the Shingle Inn network – Shingle Inn’s Franchisee of the Year.
Following on from being announced as the 2013/ 2014 Grand Plaza Retailer of the Year, against over 160 outlets including Woolworths and the 2013/ 2014 Grand Plaza Food Retailer of the Year, against all the food outlets, cafes and restaurants within the shopping centre, Peter and his team at Shingle Inn Grand Plaza were recognised as Platinum Club members and the 2014 Shingle Inn Franchisee of the Year at the company’s recent conference.
“We were absolutely thrilled to win such a coveted award,” says Peter who was at Shingle Inn’s Gala Dinner to accept the award on behalf of his team. “Within the team we all felt a mixture of shock and excitement at the announcement but are so pleased that our hard work and commitment have been recognised with this achievement.”
Peter’s wife, Patsy, and their children have worked together in the café since it first opened in August 2011. They were awarded the 2012 Rookie Franchisee of the Year in their first year which now seems prophetic.
“My family plays such a significant role in this business,” says Peter, “and without all their effort and support these awards would not have been possible and I was so pleased to accept the award on their behalf and on behalf of my wonderful team.”
“We also acknowledge the contribution and loyalty of our wonderful customers. We love seeing them come back time and again and building a relationship with them all as they take time out in our café.”
“We are going to remain focussed though and not get too carried away with celebrating as we want to build towards further success in the future,” says Peter.
The team’s hard work is obviously paying off with many positive comments, especially via Shingle Inn’s facebook page, saying how wonderful the coffee and service is at Shingle Inn Grand Plaza.
Award Winning Coffee the Latest Accolade for Mt Ommaney
Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney franchisee, Nicki Nesbitt, received Shingle Inn’s highest coffee accolade recently in a hotly contested barista competition against franchisees and store managers representing each of Shingle Inn’s 40 nation-wide stores.
The barista competition win was hot on the heels of Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney being named as the Franchise Council of Australia’s QLD/ NT Franchisee of the Year (2 or more staff) and comes just before this month’s announcement of the national award winner which Nicki sees as a good omen.
“We were totally amazed to have been nominated as the Queensland/ Northern Territory Franchisee of the Year for the second year in a row so I’m secretly hoping that the coffee competition win is the sign of more awards heading our way,” says Nicki with a grin.
Nicki and her co-owners, husband Wiesiek Lewandowski, and their best friends April and Tony Carnie, will head to Sydney ahead of the announcement of the national award winner at the FCA’s Gala Dinner on Tuesday 28 October. As part of their Queensland win, Nicki and April receive flights, accommodation and tickets to the event and will be joined by their husbands and a team from Shingle Inn’s head office.
“We thought it would be a nice opportunity to have a short break together too.”
“The best part about winning both these awards is the response we get from our customers, some of whom have brought us cards and gifts of congratulations,” says Nicki. “Part of the rewards of owning our own business is the relationships we’ve been able to build with our customers over the past, almost, five years. They’re a special part of our lives. We really hope we can win it for them,” says Nicki.

Cafe Franchise Heads West
Brisbane-based cafe franchise, Shingle Inn, is heading west with plans to have four stores launched in Western Australian by December, according to co-Director Andrew Bellchambers.
The company’s first West Australian store was opened prior to Christmas last year at Belmont Forum with locations at Innaloo, Ocean Keys and Cockburn Gateway also on the agenda.
“We believe the West Australian market is well suited to our brand,” says Mr Bellchambers. “Our business was built on an ethos of hard work, passion and personality as well as family and tradition which are all inherent traits of West Australians.”
“It’s evident in the way customers have embraced our first store at Belmont Forum as well as how hard our franchisees Vic and Chris have worked to enjoy early success as café owners.”
Vic Terpkos, together with his wife, Anne, joined forces with their daughter and son-in-law Kerrie and Chris Patten to join the Shingle Inn cafe franchise as the thirty-ninth store in the network which until then had been located entirely on the eastern seaboard.
“We’re very excited to be Shingle Inn’s first West Australian franchisees,” says Mr Terpkos.
“We were looking for something new and exciting to bring to the people of WA and found the perfect combination of culture, values and beliefs in Shingle Inn. The history and tradition of Shingle Inn together with the ‘wow’ factor of store design, products and team training helps us to create a unique community café experience for our Belmont Forum customers.”
Mr Bellchambers anticipates that Western Australia will be the biggest growth area in 2014 for the family franchise that first opened its doors in 1936 and began franchising in 2009.
“Although we’re expecting to open more stores in Australia’s Eastern states this year, I believe Western Australia provides our biggest growth opportunity which is very exciting,” says Mr Bellchambers.
Shingle Inn City Hall Opens in Brisbane
Shingle Inn City Hall Reopens With Original Restored Fitout
The opening of Shingle Inn City Hall is the reincarnation of one of Brisbane’s oldest and most loved café restaurants. Originally opened in 1936 on Edward Street, Shingle Inn was well known for its superior quality cakes, unique environment and outstanding service.
After being forced to close due to inner-city developments in August 2002, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on June 4 2010,gifting the original store fit-out to the people of Brisbane. The cafe was to be restored within another iconic Brisbane building, City Hall, allowing future generation to experience the grandeur of Shingle Inn.
Now open within the beautifully restored City Hall, Shingle Inn City Hall continues its tradition as a location that can reach across the generational divide, making it the ideal location for special occasions and memorable experiences. It is the perfect destination for Brisbane locals and tourists alike.
Very few changes have been made to the range because of its popularity, but some products have been very much influenced by Brisbane’s journey through time, especially during the war years. The menu retains some old favourites as well as meals that cater for more modern tastes, including high tea. As a licensed restaurant, Shingle Inn City Hall is a perfect destination for a decadent lunch or indulgent experience.
While some things have changed with the times, the much-loved cakes, like the historic interior, remain faithful to Shingle Inn’s history. The tradition of buying a Shingle Inn cake for morning tea, carried in a string-tied box lives on today!
Click here to visit the Shingle Inn City Hall website or call +61 7 3210 2904 to make a booking.
Shingle Inn City Hall is located on George St, Brisbane, within City Hall. Open seven days for breakfast, lunch and high tea, as well as sweet treats in between.
